Small wonders

Local artisans can make holiday gifts unique

Wonderful finds recommended by Jennifer Dodds Fox.

Embrace the “Shop Small” movement this holiday season by supporting local shops and artisans. The featured shops below are all Fort Wayne-based Etsy sellers. Local delivery/pickup options are available as are, in some cases, personal appointments before purchasing (contact the individual sellers). I suggest placing orders as soon as possible since many pieces are custom made and the businesses are typically manned by one person. Check out this collection of gift-worthy items for your loved ones that will support fellow citizens and stimulate the local economy.

CUTTING BOARDS, SCOOPS AND OTHER DECORATIVE ITEMS BY LONESOME BURL STUDIO
The artist works with many different varieties from walnut to oak to ash to cherry, bringing out their natural beauty based on each individual piece of raw wood. My pick: A set of three American Cherry Flared Candlesticks. $79. www.etsy.com shop/LonesomeBurlStudio

COOL WALL STICKERS BY ARISE DECALS
Add some panache to bare walls, cabinets, windows or mirrors with high quality, removable vinyl quotes or decorative images. What a fun way to punch up a kids’ space or add some personality to a new home! Know someone who loves Marilyn Monroe, shoes or both? Give them this decal of one of her famous quotes: “Give a girl the right pair of shoes and she can conquer the world.” My pick: 50 Polka Dot wall decals. I just have to decide what colors … $12. www.etsy.com/AriseDecals

HAND-STAMPED PET TAGES BY STANDARDPATTERN
Give your pets or pet-loving friends and family a stylish update to the run-of-the-mill tags. Choose among brass, copper, bronze or stainless steel and whether you want the tag to be flat or concave and/or stamped on both sides. Feel-good bonus: 10 percent of each order is donated to the ASPCA. My pick: Brushed brass flat stock tag. $12. www.etsy.com/shop/StandardPattern

CUSTOM COLLARS AND MATCHING LEASHES BY CHLOE'S COLLARS
(pairs nicely with StandardPattern tags). This shop offers some really snazzy patterns and colors as well as holiday bow ties for those special occasions. Pets like to get fancy from time to time, too! My pick: Green and Red Sparkle dog collar. $24. www.etsy.com/ChloesCollars

HAND SOAPS THAT ARE LITERALLY HANDS BY IMAGINARY ANIMAL
These cute and cheeky glycerin soaps are cast from molds of doll hands in various sizes, positions and colors. They make fab hostess gifts or stocking stuffers. Also from this shop are wrist zips that hold cards, keys or money. Great for anyone who likes/needs to be hands-free from time to time. Hand soaps are $16 for a set of eight in various sizes. My pick: avocado and mustard wrist zips so I can go on walks with my boys without my handbag. $22. www.etsy.com/ImaginaryAnimal

A VARIETY OF BIJOUX, MANY PERSONALIZED, BY GALWAY DESIGNS
This shop offers customized pendants, earrings and charms as well as classic rings and necklaces. Have a favorite sentiment hand stamped on a necklace for someone special on your list. Or, go for initial earrings — very cool. My pick: Delicate stacking rings. Choose rose gold, gold or silver, wear alone or stack multiple on one finger or across the hand and/or above the knuckle. $12 each. www.etsy.com/shop/GalwayDesigns

BABY SWADDLES/CARRIERS BY SNUGGY BABY
These slings are perfect gifts for new or soon-to-be mothers. Each colorful wrap comes with an instructional DVD for sleep-deprived parents. Also for sale are child-size versions for their dolls as well as wet bags that help contain messes on the go. My pick: Stretchy Wrap Baby Sling in Orange Fizz. $59. www.etsy.com/shop/SnuggyBaby and www.SnuggyBaby.com
