FRESH FASHION @ CAKES BOUTIQUE
The latest shop to open its doors at Covington Plaza is Cakes Boutique, a women’s clothing and accessory brand hailing from Kalamazoo, Michigan. With bright scarves, maxi dresses and gauzy summer-weight blazers, Cakes is another great resource for of the moment trends at affordable prices. Accessories include casual totes, studded wallets and cool jewelry like the spiked leather ring that caught my eye. The store is easy to browse thanks to a well-edited selection and new shipments arrive each week so it’s wise to check back often. ICE CREAM OF THE MONTH BY GINGER KITCHEN
I’m struggling to find the words that will adequately describe how delicious Ginger Kitchen ice cream is. Delectable? Exquisite? Scrumptious? The redheaded husband-and-wife duo behind the Ginger Kitchen, Jon and Amber Recker, are local foodies who blog about their many culinary adventures. Over a year ago, they won an at-home ice cream maker in a contest and started experimenting with interesting flavors and combinations. Their once-small batches have now turned into a monthly club with more than 75 members, and two commercial grade machines have been added to the operation. Ginger Kitchen ice cream is produced locally and uses premium, real ingredients, with no artificial flavors. Of the 15 varieties to date, I have tasted (and fallen madly in love with) four: Roasted Pistachio, Bananas Foster, Orange Lavender with Dark Chocolate and Chocolate Cayenne. There is no one word that will do these flavors justice — you just need to try the ice cream for yourself. This summer you can find Ginger Kitchen ice cream at the Barr Street Market, Lunch on the Square and Rock the Plaza. Once you’re hooked, as I am, you can sign up for the monthly mailing list by emailing email@example.com. The single month club is $20 for two pints but a $2 discount is given for three, six or 12-month subscriptions. Check out www.thegingerkitchen.com for more information and to check out their mouthwatering blog.
LUXURIOUS BATH GOODS BY LATHER & LOTIONS
As a beauty junkie and lover of all things girly, a nice bath is one of my favorite treats. I purchased a bath bomb at a craft market a few weeks ago and delighted in the fizz, scent and price. I just had to buy more but didn’t want to wait for another market. I grabbed the address from the label and scurried off to discover a shop that sells these fab bath bombs and much more. Lather & Lotions is a bright and cheery store that offers locally made soaps, lotions and bath bombs as well as supplies for making your own. They offer an extensive array of classes including the Bath Bomb Blaster Class and a DIY Cleaning Products Workshop. Lather & Lotions strives to keep everything as local as possible and they make their own line of products in house. Prices start at $3. Support and visit my new favorite spot in town Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. 613 West Brackenridge St., 46802; (260) 498-2382. For more information, including class schedule, visit www.latherandlotionsstudio.com.
