Spotted Around Town

Crispy popcorn

While I believe in shopping local, I’m also very encouraged by national brands that set up shop in our city. Fort Wayne fashionistas jumped for joy when news that Designer Shoe Warehouse was coming to town. The store is HUGE but very well organized and easy to navigate. DSW offers a nicely edited selection of handbags, scarves, socks, hosiery and foot care accessories in addition to its massive array of shoes for men and women. Plus, the chain offers a free membership program that includes $10 reward vouchers and free shipping when ordering online. As a shoe lover, I’m happy Fort Wayne now has access to additional footwear brands at great prices! 4310 Coldwater Road

Another new store to Fort Wayne is the Aveda boutique at Jefferson Pointe. Walk through the door and you’ll discover just one of the reasons Aveda is a top beauty brand: the calming herbal aromas. The hair, skin and body care products are super effective, but it’s the relaxing and restorative scents that keep me coming back for more. The store offers complimentary tea and hand massages (based on staff availability), and the staff organizes special treatment events (such as facials!) on a regular basis. If you’re totally new to the brand, Aveda offers many products in travel sizes so you can find what you love best without overspending. I left with a refreshing toning mist for my face as well as a Chakra Balancing body mist, which you’re supposed to choose with your eyes closed — don’t worry, they’ll help you! Prices start at $3.50. One of my fondest childhood memories is of riding my bike to Abby Brown’s, clutching my small allowance, dreaming of the goodies awaiting me. I visited my old haunt recently and was just as captivated as I was in my youth. I purchased a solid chocolate bar in the shape of Indiana for a fun add-on to a gift for an out-of-state friend, as well as quite a few treats for my family, including hard-to-find black licorices (the shop carries about 30 varieties). Sweets aside, the atmosphere is charming, and the owners are wonderful! 1415 East State Boulevard 46805

Columbia City-based Kernal Coladas specializes in classic (Zesty Cheddar) and funky (Dill Pickle) flavored gourmet popcorn. Created and run by Gary and Lindsey Hively, Kernel Coladas is quickly becoming a favorite among locals for special events and gifts as well as regular snacking. There are so many great flavors to try you’ll need to stop by the store to view the entire collection or purchase one of the many available sample packs. I suggest choosing The Twelve Cities Project sampler because you’ll not only get a wide variety of flavors at the great price of $12 but you’ll also be contributing to a great cause. The Twelve Cities Project is a local organization dedicated to fostering innovation, creativity, entrepreneurship and immersive education. A portion of each Twelve Cities sampler will go directly to the cause. To learn more about Twelve Cities. visit, and to order online from Kernal Coladas visit 120 West Walker Way, Columbia City

These one-of-a-kind wooden bangles at FWMoA are beautiful in their natural simplicity. David Mann travels the world in search of unique and interesting pieces of wood then customizes his work based on the natural colors, grains and knots found within. Each piece is then given a shiny finish with a combination of polyurethane, paste wax and/or walnut oil. Wear one at a time or mix and match.Custom pieces can also be commissioned by contacting Mann directly: $10-$15.
