From a locomotive to a Buddha board

The 765 Steam Locomotive

I come from an East Coast train manufacturing family that spanned multiple generations. As a child I chased locomotives around the countryside with my grandfather, and now I continue the tradition with my 4-year-old boy. We were beyond delighted to discover the restored Nickel Plate Road Steam Locomotive No. 765 in New Haven. This engine is a breathtaking relic from 1944 and has been painstakingly restored to its original beauty by passionate locals. Weighing in at 404 tons and standing 15 feet tall, the 14-wheeled 765 is truly a thing of wonder that all ages can appreciate. The Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society offers fun events and excursions throughout the year, and I highly recommend experiencing this precious gem in person. Check out upcoming events and learn more about the society’s efforts by visiting its website: fortwaynerailroad.org.

Beyond Yoga Pants @ Prana Yoga

Yoga pants have become an essential piece in the modern wardrobe. They’re comfortable, can be quite flattering and are acceptable substitutes to sweatpants at the grocery store … oh yeah, they’re great for working out, too. Finding a grrreat pair, though, can be harder than one would think. I prefer mine in thick, substantial fabrics and without colorful waistbands or piping for maximum versatility. I’ve taken a few classes at local studio Prana Yoga, known for its inspiring workshops, and while I always love the practice (with yogini Erin Erb) I was thrilled to discover Beyond Yoga clothing in their boutique. These yoga pants are the most plush I have ever touched, and the construction is superior. Just try them on, and you’ll see they’re worth every penny. $56-69. www.pranayogaschool.com

OFABZ Swimwear

Mother & daughter team Cheryl & Olivia Fabian are the local talents behind high-end swimwear collection OFabz Swimwear. Cheryl had been making skating dresses for years, but after Olivia couldn’t find what she wanted in stores they whipped up their first swimsuit with leftover fabric. That first suit has now turned into a booming business that features vintage-inspired pieces with thoughtful details. OFabz designs custom fabrics for some of their suits, and every step in the manufacturing process is done in the United States. One of their standout designs is the Whim Suit, a mesh one-piece that can be thrown on over a bikini to keep it in place during water skiing and wake boarding. The Whim Suit is also a favorite among dancers as a unique and stylish layer for practice or performance. OFabz has big plans for expansion into the national market via a new website/e-store and a collection of pop-up shop dates around the country. Keep your eyes on this up-and-coming, high-style brand for new launches and local events. ofabz.com.

Sale & Pepper @ Candelight Antiques

On a tour of local antique stores, I happened across an impressive array of salt and pepper shakers at Candlelight Antiques on Broadway. Having just moved back to Indiana, a set of corn shakers caught my eye and has since been making my kitchen table more fun. Candlelight Antiques hosts the lot (over 2,000 sets!) from one seller. How fun it must have been for one enthusiast to acquire the giant collection! I imagine some were gifts and others were souvenirs from his/her travels. Add some kitsch to your kitchen or give as a gift to commemorate a special occasion. The gardener in your life might like a pair of jolly gnomes while the Sea Captains or lobsters would make for a thoughtful housewarming present for a beach or lake house. 3205 Broadway, (260) 458-8308

The Buddha Board  @ FWMoA

I’m always looking for ways to calm my mind, so when I found the Buddha Board at the FWMoA I knew it had to come home with me. The boards are for water painting … not watercolor … simply water. Your artwork disappears as the water evaporates seconds later, always leaving you with a clean slate. The Original Buddha Board is a beautiful decorative piece while the laptop and mini versions are portable and are available in multiple colors. All three styles are clean and attractive, but the Original Buddha Board adds a gorgeous, oh-so-Zen touch to your home or office. $33 for the original and laptop versions, $9.95 for the mini. 311 E. Main St. (260) 422-6467
